Hide your thumbs when passing a graveyard

RETURN TO INDEX
Hiding your thumbs when passing a graveyard is a Japanese belief as the Japanese word for "thumb" is oya yubi, which translates to "parent-finger". In this superstition, hiding your thumb in a fist is said to protect your parents from the spirits of the deceased that are thought to linger around a graveyard or funeral car.
