Salting a bird's tail

RETURN TO INDEX
The superstition of salting a bird's tail is a European and American legend that states that sprinkling salt on a bird's tail will temporarily make it unable to fly, allowing it to be caught. The superstition is commonly told to children and is not usually believed by adults. The superstition may date back to the 16th century or earlier, and is found in European countries like Sweden.
